The old Taco Bell ad told us to run for the border.
Now Border City Wrestling gives us another reason.
This Friday, May 29 in LaSalle, Ontario, BCW presents a star-studded event — not your average independent show.
Headlining is WWF Intercontinental champion Rocky Maivia against Windsor’s Scott D’Amore. Fellow Nation of Domination member D-Lo Brown is also on the show against Larry “Destiny’ Brun.
Head of promotions Chuck Fader, 41, said that BCW “can go at anyone we want” in the WWF, in exchange for using young talent.
Fans win in this situation, because the young talent loaned from the WWF are the stars of tomorrow. Biggest of the bunch is the tag match pitting Sexton Hardcastle (Adam Copeland, AKA The Edge) & Christian Cage (longtime partner of Hardcastle) against Rodney Blackbeard (who attended the recent WWF training camp) & Joe E. Legend (a young vet from Toronto).
D’Amore, the talent booker for the group, believes their product is as good as any independent anywhere.
“What we provide I think is a proper mix of established veteran wrestlers and we mix them in with the new talent, ” he said. “I’ve been very open with anyone who asks me that our wrestling is just as strong as anything out there. You take our average night of wrestling and you put it up against a WWF house show, and you take away the glitz and the glamour. You tear it away to its heart, just basic wrestling and the quality of the wrestling and entertainment, ours stands head and shoulders above.”
D’Amore, who is only 23, has been in the business off an on for seven years. He recently had a tryout with ECW and is looking forward to the challenge of facing the I-C champ Maivia.
“Rocky is a great wrestler, or at the very least a very solid wrestler. He is as charismatic as hell,” commented D’Amore, the BCW Can-Am Heavyweight Champ. “He is probably the best young performer to hit wrestling in the last five or six years. … We’ll get in there. We’ll put on a great wrestling match.”
The show is at the LaSalle Arena, which seats about 1,200 people. To get to LaSalle, take the 401 to Windsor, to Highway 3. Take the Bridge to USA exit and travel to the E.C. Row Expressway and go west. After a few lights, you will be in LaSalle. Look for the Mobile Gas station at Old Front Rd, and the arena is behind it.
At the show Border City Wrestling will announce publically its deal to join with Cambridge, Ont.’s ICW.
