Mills Boys
(The Varsity, Tuesday, January 12, 1954)
Al and Tiny Mills, veterans of 98 consecutive weeks’ wrestling at Maple Leaf Gardens have vacated their British Empire tag team championship and have joined Kirk Wipper’s University of Toronto team.

“We have been trying to persuade the Mills brothers to come to Varsity for some time now”, Wipper said yesterday. “They are excellent wrestlers, know all the tricks of the sport and will probably give the Blues the added strength they need to win this year’s championship”.

Al Mills is expected to work in the heavyweight division while Tiny will be a 191-pounder. The two will enroll in the Philosophy (English or History option) course.

WRESTLERS HURT IN HIGHWAY CRASH AT ST. CATHARINES
(Buffalo News, Friday, January 21, 1955)
ST. CATHARINES, Ont. Jan. 21. – The wrestling Mills brothers may have won their tag team match in Toronto Thursday night but they lost a bout with a truck here early today.

The Canadian tag team champions suffered severe lacerations shortly after 2:30 A. M. when their car hit the back of a transport truck on the Queen Elizabeth Way.

Al Mills, 36, who was driving, was cut about the hands, while 34-year-old Tiny was thrown against the windshield and required 28 stitches to close facial lacerations.

Hospital authorities said Al Mills was not kept in the hospital, but Tiny is still a patient in “satisfactory” condition.

Grantham police said the brothers, who had just defeated wrestlers Whipper Watson and Paul Baillargeon in Toronto, apparently were on their way back to their trailer camp in Niagara Falls, N. Y., when the accident occurred.

The transport truck driven by Roger Vandaele of Tilsonburg, Ont., also was eastbound and had stopped for the Geneva St. traffic light.

Al Mills told Constable James Diplock he misjudged the distance when swinging around the truck. His car was almost completely wrecked.

Tag Team Battle. Mills-Kowalski Duo Faces Tough Match
(Honolulu Advertiser, Sunday, September 28, 1958)
Tiny Mills, 275 pound lumberjack from Canada, and Stan Kowalski [pictured], 261 pounder from Minnesota, are claiming the Hawaiian tag team wrestling trophy vacated for over a year.

The two big, rough matmen have turned back all comers. Tonight they face a tough duo made up of Lucky Simunovich and Johnny Swenski in a two out of three falls, 45-minute time limit struggle at the Civic Auditorium.

Swenski, 228, and Simunovich, 233, hope to offset their opponents’ physical advantages’ with speed and their, ringcraft. Both are experienced in all phases of mat lore and are capable of holding their own in any style of wrestling.

Mills and Kowalski are best at rough-housing, so today’s team battle is expected to be a wild brawl.

Jerry Gordet and George Bollas, the Zebra Kid, clash in the semifinal. This is a return match signed to go one fall to a finish on a winner take all basis.

Bollas, in the best condition of his career, will have a big weight advantage on Gordet, who relies on skill and speed.

Juan Humberto of Mexico takes on Beorge Kongozan in the opener at 8 p.m. Kongozan, former sumo champion here, has improved with each match and should give Humberto a tough session.

Lions Sponsored Matches Friday To Feature Top Pro Grapplers
(Dunn County News, Wednesday, April 6, 1960)
A giant wrestling show, sponsored by the Menomonie Lions club, will be staged at the high school gymnasium Friday, April 8 at 8:30 p.m.

Headlining the show are Tiny Mills and Stan Kowalski vs. Butch Levy and Frank Townsend in a doubles match that is set for two out of three falls, one hour lime limit.

The semi-final pits “Blackjack” Daniels, 255, vs. “Man Mountain” Campbell, 311, in a one fall, 30 minute time limit match. Kowalski and Townsend will open the show with a one fall, 20 minute time limit match.

The Lions will use proceeds from the show to defray the cost of playground equipment for city parks. More than $1,000 is being spent for swings, slides and other equipment that will be ordered.

Tickets for the show are available from Lions members and also will be sold at the door. Student tickets are 50c, adult general admission $1, and reserved ringside seat, $1.50. Children under 12 years of age will be admitted free. If accompanied by their parents.

The team of Mills and Kowalski is known as Murder, Inc., and are now recognized as the International Tag Team Champions of the World.

Tiny is from Alberta, Canada, weighs 247 and stands 6-5. The ex-lumberjack is well known to fans for his rough and ready style of wrestling.

Stan is the smaller of the two, tipping the scales at 260 and standing 6-4. While with the Submarine Service in World War II, he won the Pacific Fleet wrestling title.

Since Tiny and Stan have teamed up, they have gone through every combination of tag wrestling and are undefeated in over 200 tag matches. (Except for disqualification which they do not consider a loss.)

You know he’s a hero by the way he walks into the ring. Head up, chin confident, but not aggressive, with the blissful knowledge that not a spitball is aimed in his direction.

Curls tousled boyishly over his grey eyes and not a hint of a villainish swagger, he carries himself like a muscled young David about to slay some lowdown Goliath.

His name is Frank Townsend. Crowds note his 268 pounds of tough body and applaud his every move as he systematically disposes of an opponent.

Levy, 250 and 6-0, will team with Townsend. He is backed by an outstanding athletic record at the University of Minnesota where he won the AAU, Big Ten and NCAA wrestling title as a junior and the National AAU crown, as a senior.

He was a member of the Gopher grip team and went on to play professional ball from 1945-48 with the Cleveland Rams, Los Angeles Rams and Los Angeles Dons.

Butch, the plumber, is one of the great straight wrestlers of recent years, a wrestlers’ wrestler.

Elimination Bout On Fair Mat Card
(Dunn County News, Wednesday, July 20, 1960)
Annette Palmer, North Dakota champion and one of the chief challengers for June Byer’s world title, is an explosive girl with an ambition of some day wearing the women’s mat crown July 29. Annette, in one of the feature professional wresting bouts at the fairgrounds, will attempt to eliminate Elle St. John as one of Miss Byers challengers.

The two girls, not too ladylike once the bell sounds to send them into action, realize the winner remains as a challenger the loser as an also ran.

Annette claims Miss Byers has been ducking her. But a victory over Elle will set the stage for a title shot “I win my matches in any manner I have to. If I have to throw punches I do.” Annette, a strong armed beauty, told Howard Kuhn, secretary of the Dunn County Fair association.

While the women’s bout draws attention it is secondary to the main event which finds Tiny Mills and Stan Kowalski, two of the meanest and roughest wrestlers in the game, risking their world tag team championship against Roy McClarty and Don (Man Mountain) Campbell, a 311 pound giant.

The title match will be two out of three falls with a one hour time limit. Mills, the wild Canadian lumberjack, insisted on the time limit before signing for the bout. For three months Mills and Campbell, ranked as the strongest man in the mat game, have been feuding. They’ll have a chance to settle their differences as a feature of fan week.
