A long-rumoured crossover match involving AEW’s The Young Bucks and WWE talent reportedly came much closer to happening than many fans realised.
Speaking on the latest episode of Being The Elite, Matt Jackson revealed that The Young Bucks and Kenny Omega seriously pursued a match against the New Day in 2018, even going as far as speaking directly with Paul “Triple H” Levesque about the possibility. Jackson made the comments while watching old footage alongside Omega and the New Day members.
“We truly were trying to get a New Day, Young Bucks, Kenny match to happen. An Elite vs. New Day match actively,” Jackson said. “They said they were trying on their side. We were definitely talking to our bosses. Even to the point in 2018 when we got on the phone with Triple H, and we talked to him and said, ‘Hey, we would really like to do this match.’”
Jackson admitted the conversation may have been driven more by WWE’s interest in signing The Elite rather than arranging the crossover bout itself, but insisted the group believed the match was genuinely possible at the time.
“I don’t know if he was necessarily interested in just doing that match. I think he was more interested in pursuing us to work for him, but we talked to him about it. We were serious about doing the match, and we thought we’d probably be able to do it, and unfortunately, we never did.”
The Young Bucks & The New Day Have Been Friends For Years Outside Of Wrestling
The Young Bucks, Omega and the New Day have maintained a close friendship for years outside the ring, frequently appearing together in gaming content, social media videos and online tournaments.
The comments have gained additional attention following the recent departures of Kofi Kingston and Xavier Woods from WWE. Reports indicated the pair were asked to restructure their contracts before ultimately deciding to leave the company.
Since news of their exits broke, several AEW names have publicly expressed interest in potentially working with them in the future, including The Young Bucks, FTR, Swerve Strickland and Bobby Lashley.
