The result of the WWE Championship match between Drew McIntyre and Sami Zayn was reportedly debated internally until the day of the Royal Rumble.
According to Dave Meltzer in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter, there were discussions backstage over who should leave the event as WWE Champion, with Sami Zayn actively pushing for the victory. Meltzer wrote that the final call came down to Paul “Triple H” Levesque, who sided with the view that the title should not change hands.
“I don’t think Zayn should have won and neither did Levesque in the end,” Meltzer wrote. “Still, this was a subject of discussion as to who would win right until the day of the show since Zayn was pushing for it.”
Drew McIntyre ultimately retained the title, continuing his reign heading towards WrestleMania 42.
When Did Drew McIntyre Win The Undisputed WWE Title?
Drew McIntyre won the Undisputed WWE Championship in a three-stages-of-hell match on the January 9 episode of SmackDown, where Jacob Fatu attacked Cody Rhodes during the final steel cage stage.
That attack led to Fatu facing Rhodes at Saturday Night’s Main Event, a bout that ended in a no-contest. The Observer also noted that current WrestleMania plans call for McIntyre to defend the WWE Title against Rhodes, though Fatu could still be added to make it a triple threat match.
