A historic reign came to an end on Tuesday night as a WWE NXT championship belt changed hands in chaotic fashion.
Myles Borne captured the WWE NXT North American Title for the first time, defeating Ethan Page in the main event of NXT last night. The closing moments were packed with interference and momentum swings before Borne finally sealed the victory.
The Vanity Project rushed to ringside during the match and struck Borne with one of their championship belts, allowing Page to score a near fall. Hank & Tank soon followed, brawling with The Vanity Project to neutralise the numbers advantage. Ricky Saints appeared on the turnbuckle during the chaos, but Joe Hendry pulled him back to the floor, leading to another fight at ringside.
Amid the disorder, the turnbuckle pad was exposed. Page attempted to finish Borne with the Twisted Grin, but Borne countered, shoving the champion into the exposed corner. Borne then connected with a Zig Zag to secure the three-count and the championship.
Page’s reign dated back to May, when he defeated Ricky Saints to win the title. At 273 days, he exits as the longest-reigning North American Champion in NXT history.
WWE NXT North American Title Change Comes After Heated Rivalry
The title change followed weeks of tension on WWE NXT between the two competitors. Ethan Page had repeatedly encouraged Myles Borne to adopt a different mindset, but Borne had rejected his advice. Last week, after Page retained the championship against Shiloh Hill, Borne made the save with a steel chair and helped clear The Vanity Project from the ring. He then wrapped the chair around Page’s knee and demanded a title match. Although Page agreed, he taunted Borne, claiming he would not follow through. Borne responded by stomping on the chair to close the show.
One week later, Borne backed up his words and walked away with the North American Championship, ending a record-setting reign in the process.
