It truly is the end of an era for some WWE fans.
The brand WWE Home Video brings back lots of good memories to anyone who grew up in the eighties or nineties when physical media was king. Fans would flood to their local video stores to not only rent or purchase copies of the WWE’s big pay-per-view events but their specialty releases like The Rock: The People’s Champ, Divas in Hedonism and Undertaker: This Is My Yard.
WWE Home Video replaced Coliseum Video which was owned by Evart Enterprises and operated between 1985 and 1997. They were the first company to release WWE events on tape as well as specialty releases like Villains of the Squared Circle, Inside the Steel Cage and the Best of the WWE collection along with many others.
Many of these WWE Home Video and Coliseum Video titles are now available on the WWE Network.
News out of Europe today has physical media fans concerned that the WWE as a whole may be ending their physical releases in North America.
After 36 years, Freemantle has announced that they will no longer be producing WWE physical media.
“With great sadness we must announce that WWE have taken the decision to withdraw from the Home Video category,” the company said in a statement. “No licensing deals will be renewed worldwide after 2023. Everyone at WWE Home Video UK would like to thank all our collectors and fans for many years of support and passion,” said the company in a statement.
Their final release will be Crown Jewel 2023 2-disc DVD on December 18th in the UK.
In 2021, there was word that WWE was ending physical media releases of their content in 2022 but that decision was reverse at the time with titles like WrestleMania still being produced.
