WWE Hall of Famer The Godfather says he came close to joining the New World Order in WCW during the height of the Monday Night Wars.
Speaking on The Velvet Ropes with SoCal Val, Charles Wright, better known to fans as The Godfather, revealed that he was deep into contract talks with WCW that would have seen him sign a three-year deal and debut as a bodyguard for the nWo before transitioning into an in-ring role. Wright said the paperwork was nearly finalised and he was waiting for the contract to arrive when communication abruptly stopped.
According to Wright, WCW ultimately chose to sign Virgil for the role instead.
“I was supposed to join the nWo,” Wright said. “We worked out a three-year deal… I’m waiting for the contract to come, and they’re not calling me back. Then I look up and I see Virgil.”
Wright believes the decision was made for financial reasons rather than creative preference.
“My price was way higher than Virgil’s,” he added. “I think they just didn’t want to pay me that much money to do what I was going to do.”
Had the agreement gone through, Wright would have left WWE just as his Godfather character was gaining traction, marking a significant shift in his career path.
