A WWE Hall of Famer has spoken about why they think Vince McMahon was the best pro wrestling commentator.
Jim Ross is often regarded as the greatest professional wrestling commentator of all time, but Bully Ray believes another familiar voice deserves that distinction. Speaking during a discussion on Busted Open Radio, the ECW legend argued that former WWE CEO Vince McMahon was the best play-by-play announcer the business has ever produced.
McMahon spent more than two decades behind the commentary desk before fully embracing his on-screen Mr McMahon character, a period Bully feels is frequently overlooked when discussing wrestling’s greatest broadcasters.
“I know that’s not a popular opinion because Vince was very over the top,” Bully said. “But Vince could do the one thing that I don’t believe anybody else did better than Vince, and there’s a good reason for it. It was the stories that Vince told. It was the sound bites. It was the snippets.”
Bully explained that McMahon’s deep understanding of WWE storytelling gave him an edge at the commentary desk.
“Nobody understood the story being told in the middle of the ring better than Vince, because they were his stories told through his characters,” he said. “Thus, he could convey it on the announce table better than anybody else, in my opinion.”
Besides Vince McMahon, Which Other Announcers Did Bully Ray Acknowledge As Some Of Wrestling’s Greats?
While singling out Vince McMahon, Bully was careful to acknowledge other elite voices. He praised Jim Ross alongside legendary NWA broadcaster Bob Caudle and AEW’s Tony Schiavone as personal favourites. Classic voices such as Gorilla Monsoon, Bobby Heenan and Gordon Solie are also routinely cited among the greatest of earlier eras.
Bully’s co-host Dave LaGreca offered a modern counterpoint, declaring Michael Cole the best play-by-play announcer in wrestling history. The differing opinions highlight how commentary excellence often depends on era, style and storytelling priorities rather than a single definitive voice.
