WWE Hall of Famer Abdullah the Butcher has reportedly been hospitalised with some serious health concerns.
Posted on Twitter by wrestling booking agent Steve Stasiak, Abdullah the Butcher is reportedly in the hospital and is battling some serious health issues. The exact nature of Abdullah’s condition is not currently known. The wrestling legend, whose career spanned over seven decades, turned 84 in January this year.
Abdullah started his wrestling journey in 1958 at the age of 17, working for Montreal promoter Jack Britton, and became one of wrestling’s biggest attractions and worked a similar schedule to Andre the Giant, travelling to various territories to work with their top babyfaces as a monster foreign heel.
Abdullah became a big star in All Japan Pro Wrestling, having notable feuds with Jumbo Tsuruta and Terry Funk during the 1970s and 80s. He was also a big star in Puerto Rico and held the WWC Universal Heavyweight Title five times and the WWC Puerto Rico Title three times.
Abdullah The Butcher’s Tainted Legacy
Despite having a lengthy and successful career and receiving a WWE Hall of Fame induction in 2011, it was also in 2011 that Abdullah’s legacy was tarnished as he was accused of infecting independent wrestler Devon Nicholson with Hepatitis C by cutting him with a blade without his consent during a match they had together on the Canadian independent scene in 2007.
Abdullah was sued by Nicholson, and Nicholson was successfully awarded $2.3 million in damages after an Ontario court ruled in favour of Nicholson. The Fulton County Court of Georgia also ruled that the judgment would be upheld in the state of Georgia, where Abdullah lived at the time.
Abdullah’s life and career were covered in a Dark Side of the Ring documentary that came out in July 2023.
In recent news, an update has been provided on the health status of Abdullah the Butcher.
