WWE has confirmed the main event match for tomorrow’s Saturday Night’s Main Event show.
Michael Cole has confirmed that CM Punk and Cody Rhodes versus Gunther and Sami Zayn will headline this weekend’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event. Speaking on The Sal Licata Show, Cole revealed the high-profile tag team match will close the show at Madison Square Garden on Saturday, July 18.
“The main event on Saturday will be a tag team match with CM Punk, the WWE Champion, teaming with Cody Rhodes, the guy he meets at SummerSlam for the title, against Gunther and Sami Zayn,” Cole said.
Cole also explained the storylines behind the match, with tensions continuing to build ahead of SummerSlam.
“You’ve got CM Punk, who is the WWE Champion. Punk won the championship from Sami Zayn. Now Punk is going to team up with Cody Rhodes, who he faces at SummerSlam in a couple of weeks,” Cole said. “On the other side you’ve got Sami Zayn, who’s obviously upset over the fact that CM Punk took his championship from him and believes he should have a rematch.”
The match was made on the July 10 episode of SmackDown. After CM Punk captured the Undisputed WWE Championship from Sami Zayn in Chicago on the July 6 episode of Raw, he agreed to defend the title against Cody Rhodes at SummerSlam. Gunther later demanded to be added to the championship match, but instead was placed in the tag team bout alongside Zayn by SmackDown General Manager Nick Aldis, a decision that prompted Gunther to attack Aldis.
What Other Matches Are Taking Place On Saturday Night’s Main Event?
Saturday Night’s Main Event will also feature Paige and Brie Bella defending the WWE Women’s Tag Team Championship against Fallon Henley and Lainey Reid, Danhausen facing JD McDonagh in a No Disqualification Match, Lyra Valkyria taking on Bayley, and an in-ring appearance from World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns alongside NBA star Jalen Brunson.
The event streams live on Peacock in the United States and on Netflix internationally.
