It was a good time for professional wrestling and gamers at the box office this weekend.
Street Fighter brought in $31M in North America and finished in first place, reports Deadline.
In comparison, Mortal Kombat 2 made $38.5M its opening weekend.
Based on the Capcom video game series, Street Fighter stars WWE’s Roman Reigns as Akuma, Cody Rhodes as Guile and NJPW’s Hirooki Goto as E. Honda.
In the film estranged martial artists Ryu (Andrew Koji) and Ken Masters (Noah Centineo) who trained under the same master reunite when Chun-Li (Callina Liang) recruits them for the World Warrior Tournament, a competition featuring some of the world’s most dangerous fighters. However, the tournament conceals a sinister conspiracy orchestrated by M. Bison (David Dastmalchian).
The first game in the series was released in 1987 and since then there have been 53 games including spin-offs and crossovers.
There have been nine movies and two television series inspired by the games.
