Will Ospreay has explained the key to his success in pro wrestling.
At AEW All In London, Will Ospreay reached the pinnacle of AEW when he defeated Kenny Omega to capture the AEW World Championship in an instant classic.
During an interview with Extreme Channel Poland, the Aerial Assassin reflected on his journey to the top. He admitted some luck was involved, as several top stars on the independent scene and in NJPW moved on as he was coming up, creating opportunities for him to make a mark.
“I generally do believe I got lucky, because I came into the British wrestling scene and then guys like PAC left. So there was room for a British high-flyer to be doing some stuff. Then, I started making my name, and I was just doing every show I physically could. Like, Friday to Sunday, I was literally up and down the country. I would work for next to nothing.
“Then, from there it was just… I got lucky and AJ and Nakamura and the Good Brothers all got signed [by WWE], so then there was a huge opening in New Japan to go and make my name there.”
While timing played a part, Ospreay doesn’t think he would have been able to capitalise if he hadn’t been working as much as possible when opportunities came up. He added that he was never doing it for the money; instead, it was his passion for pro wrestling that kept him going, and ultimately helped him find success.
“So, all of this is about timing, but I would have not got to that position if I wasn’t wrestling every single weekend. I think it’s so so important to tell people, like, the economy, like global economy right now, like everyone’s in the s**ts right now. So many people are scraping bits of money together to try and make sure that they’re okay and they can put food in their fridge and ensure that they’re looking after their family.
“I was lucky enough that my parents supported me and I had so much support from my entire family to be able to live out my dream. I never did this for money. I did this because I f**king loved it. I loved every single bit of it, and I think that’s where I found my success. Because I didn’t do it for money. I just did it because I wanted to be involved in this.”
Will Ospreay’s AEW All Out Challenger Announced
On the September 2nd edition of Dynamite, Will Ospreay and United Empire took on the team of The Demand and The Dogs in a huge 10-Man Tag Team bout. Ospreay won the match for his team when he dropped Clark Connors with a Hidden Blade for the pinfall. Afterwards, the Death Riders rescued Ospreay from a beatdown by The Dogs.
Just as Jon Moxley helped him to his feet, a graphic appeared on the screen announcing that Moxley would be challenging Ospreay for the AEW World Title at All Out, taking both men by surprise.
