AEW star Will Ospreay updated fans on his recovery during a surprise appearance at NJPW New Year Dash.
At Forbidden Door in August, Will Ospreay joined forces with Kenny Omega, Kota Ibushi, Darby Allin, and Hiroshi Tanahashi to defeat Jon Moxley’s Death Riders, Gabe Kidd, and The Young Bucks in a brutal Steel Cage match.
Things didn’t end there, though, as the Death Riders trapped Ospreay in the cage and beat him down before Moxley finished things by wrapping a steel chair around the Aerial Assassin’s neck and delivering a Stomp.
The reason behind the angle was to write Will Ospreay off TV to allow the star to undergo treatment for a herniated disc in his C2 and C6 vertebrae. In December, Alex Windsor gave an update on Ospreay’s progress, saying he’s “smashing” his recovery and thinks he’ll be better than ever when he gets back in the ring.
Will Ospreay Admits Recovery Could Take A Long Time
At NJPW New Year Dash on January 5th, Will Ospreay came to the ring to offer his support to Callum Newman, who is now the de facto leader of his former faction, United Empire. Ospreay said his recovery still has a long way to go, but he “can see the light at the end of the tunnel.” He then promised that, once he was good to go, he would return to NJPW to help United Empire.
“I can’t come back right now. I still need to recover. It’s going to take me a long time, but I’m getting closer and closer. I’m getting better and better — and I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.
“When I’m good to go, I’m going to handle some business in AEW. I’m going to come back to New Japan Pro Wrestling.”
While Ospreay had good intentions, Newman didn’t take his intervention well and looked to attack him from behind with a steel chair. However, Great-O-Khan and Henare prevented him from following through.
Backstage after the show, Will Ospreay clarified his intentions, saying AEW is still his main focus, but he hopes to return to Japan for multiple shows.
“[AEW]’s my main stage, where I fight every week. But I want to come back. Whether it’s two shows a year, three, or five. I’m determined to make it happen.”
