Will Ospreay says he could main event any show in the world against a recently departed WWE star.
Ilja Dragunov left WWE after his contract expired in August. Since then, it has been widely expected that he will sign with AEW, and Dave Meltzer of the Wrestling Observer Newsletter has even reported that the deal is already done.
During an interview with Jon Alba on The Takedown on SI, AEW World Champion Will Ospreay commented on the possibility of the Mad Dragon joining the promotion. With the two having never met in the ring despite being on shows together, the Aerial Assassin says there’s a lot of money to be made if they do face off.
“Dragunov was someone that performed on wXw for a fair bit of time, and there have been shows that we’ve been on, we’ve been on the same shows together, but we have never shared a ring with one another.
“Hearing that there’s potential that he is coming in is exciting because I’m sure if you bring him in and you keep us on separate sides of the roster and build us both up, it could generally be like a big money-drawing singles match that could main event any show anywhere in the world.”

Will Ospreay went on to discuss Dragunov’s in-ring style, saying he is a unique performer, even compared to the stars on the AEW roster. Ospreay puts this down to the level of intensity the star has in his matches, something he says makes him an “anomaly.”
“As a performer, I think there isn’t many people that can bring the level of intensity that he does. I think he has a crazy ability to be to make anyone that he is wrestling perform onto the same intensity that he does.
“I think that’s a very unique pro wrestler to be able to do that because there are, of course, intense individuals within AEW. But I feel like he is a complete anomaly.
“If he was to come in, I think he stands out straight away. There isn’t anyone that I can really say that matches that type of energy that he brings.”
Will Ospreay isn’t the only AEW star who wants to face Ilja Dragunov, as Kyle Fletcher has made it clear he wants a rematch with the Mad Dragon if he becomes All Elite.
