It is not true, that according to Warner Brothers Discovery.
The company is denying claims made by The Wrestling Observer’s Dave Meltzer that they were in any way responsible for Brody King not appearing on Dynamite last night.
In a statement, WBD is saying: “Warner Bros. Discovery did not have any involvement in Brody King’s upcoming AEW schedule. Any speculation to the contrary is categorically false. Brody is scheduled to appear during the next AEW event, which will air this Saturday on TNT and HBO Max.”
Meltzer claimed that WBD exerted their influence and had King pulled from the show. WBD owns a minority stake in AEW, less than 10%. They do however own the TNT, TBS and HBO Max platforms that AEW airs on.
PWInsider reports that King was never scheduled for Dynamite.
Meltzer reported: “The deal is that they didn’t want the fans in the arena to be chanting that. If Brody came out, there was that risk… when he comes back, it will happen again.”
Meltzer added that the call was made at a corporate level, not by AEW creative.
“This is again not a Tony call. This is from above,” he said. “Nobody wants to get on Trump’s bad side. If it wasn’t for that, nobody would care, it’s just a chant, but unfortunately they’ve got a company [WBD] they’re trying to sell and get regulatory approval from a guy who is gonna take that stuff personal.”
But later on Thursday, Meltzer had this to say:
“Those at AEW have said nobody from WBD asked them not to use Brody King on last night’s show and this was just how it was booked to only use him in a video package. We had heard over the weekend that there were concerns about how much pub the situation had gotten from the WBD side, but those at AEW said that they were not told not to put him on the show.”
Last week, anti-ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) chants broke out on Dynamite last week as Brody King was set to square off against AEW World Champion, MJF. The moment went viral and was covered by much of the mainstream media in the USA.
In the past, Brody has worn t-shirts slamming ICE and teamed with Headlocked Comics to help Local Hearts Foundation feed families who were affected by the LA ICE raids.
Brody King will face MJF for the title at AEW Grand Slam Australia this Saturday.
