John Cena has provided another update on the planned John Cena Classic, saying WWE is continuing to work on the event ahead of its expected launch later this year.
The WWE legend first announced the concept at Backlash, revealing it would feature WWE Raw and SmackDown stars competing alongside NXT talent. The event will also introduce a unique fan-voted element, with supporters deciding the overall winner regardless of match results.
Speaking to Extra TV at San Diego Comic-Con, John Cena admitted he could not reveal many details but said he remains excited about what WWE is putting together.
“I got to withhold the updates. What I can tell you is we are working forward, and I cannot tell you how excited I am about it. The event, what it stands for, I want to do something great for WWE fans towards the end of the calendar year. Man, I wish I could give you spoilers, but I got to be loyal to my company. What I can tell you is we’re working on it, and I am going to give you my absolute best. If an event is going to wear my name, especially in the WWE realm, I’ve always given my best to WWE. The Classic will be no less.”
John Cena Classic Could Take Place In December
A report from WrestleVotes earlier this year suggested the inaugural John Cena Classic could take place in December, potentially coinciding with the one-year anniversary of Cena’s retirement match against Gunther.
While WWE has yet to announce an official date or venue, Cena’s latest comments indicate plans for the event remain firmly on track.
