WWE is making notable changes to the format of this weekend’s WWE Saturday Night’s Main Event, with John Cena’s retirement bout set to take place on a show that reportedly has no fixed runtime.
Speaking on Wrestling Observer Live, Bryan Alvarez said the broadcast will have a scheduled start time but no mandated end time, giving WWE complete flexibility for Cena’s final appearance. Alvarez compared the situation to Goldberg’s retirement speech on NBC, which was cut short due to strict timing requirements, something that will not apply here.
“Right now, the Saturday Night’s Main Event show, has no runtime.” Alvarez said. “It has a start time, but it has no end time. So basically, the show can pretty much go however long they want. This is not going to be like when they were on NBC and Goldberg’s match and wathever happened there. And they had to get him in and out and he was upset about it or whatever. They can basically go as long as they need to go. Probaly will end up going like two and a half hours.”
Alvarez also noted that Cena vs Gunther is expected to open the show, with the match and post-match segment given as much time as Cena wishes. He suggested the entire opening hour on Peacock could be devoted to Cena’s farewell before the remainder of the card proceeds without any time constraints.
