An update has been provided on who Roman Reigns could be facing in his guaranteed title match at WrestleMania 42.
Roman Reigns is officially heading to Las Vegas after winning the Men’s Royal Rumble match on January 31 in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. The Tribal Chief last eliminated Gunther to secure the victory, earning a guaranteed championship match at WrestleMania 42 and becoming a two-time Royal Rumble winner.
According to the Wrestling Observer‘s Dave Meltzer, the current plan is for Reigns to challenge CM Punk for the World Heavyweight Championship at WrestleMania 42. If it goes ahead, the match would mark their first singles encounter since January 2014. While the two recently shared the ring in a Triple Threat with Seth Rollins at WrestleMania 41 Night One, a one-on-one clash between Reigns and Punk has been more than a decade in the making.
Elsewhere on the card, the Undisputed WWE Championship is currently expected to see Drew McIntyre defend against Cody Rhodes. However, Meltzer reports that a possible change is being discussed, with Jacob Fatu potentially being added to the match, turning it into a Triple Threat.
What Were The Original Plans For Roman Reigns At WrestleMania 42?
Meltzer added that the original plan for the WWE Title picture was another showdown between Cody Rhodes and Roman Reigns, which would have been their third WrestleMania meeting in four years. Those plans were reportedly dropped after being set up at Survivor Series, with WWE pivoting instead toward the long-awaited Reigns vs. Punk singles match.
WrestleMania 42 is scheduled for April 18 and April 19 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, Nevada.
