Triple H says Vince McMahon continued to influence WWE creative during the early stages of his transition into the company’s top creative role.
Speaking on Cody Rhodes’ podcast, What Do You Wanna Talk About?, Triple H reflected on his rise to Chief Content Officer and whether WrestleMania 40 marked the first show fully under his control.
“I think so,”
Levesque said, before noting there was no clear moment when full authority shifted.
“It’s not like one day, ‘Here, it’s yours’… there’s no real clear moment for me. But I would consider it that, yes.”
He explained that Vince McMahon remained involved behind the scenes during that period, regularly contributing to creative discussions.
“There was so many aspects to that of, ‘Hey, Vince is stepping away… but he’s chiming in.’ And he was still meeting with me all the time and still, you know, directing traffic from the side.”
He admitted the situation made it difficult at times to publicly stand behind creative decisions that were not entirely his own.
“At the end of the day… you have to defend your position and explain it to people,” Levesque said. “If it’s a little bit not your position… you don’t want to say, ‘Well… it wasn’t totally my decision.’”
Levesque also pointed out that WWE creative is often more complex than it appears, with injuries and backstage dynamics frequently shaping what makes it to television.
When Was Triple H Made CCO Of WWE?
Triple H was officially named Chief Content Officer in September 2022 during a turbulent period for WWE. Vince McMahon initially stepped away amid controversy before returning to oversee the sale of WWE to Endeavor, and ultimately resigned in January 2024 following a lawsuit filed by former employee Janel Grant, which remains ongoing.
