Trick Williams may have risen to become Mister Main Event of Smackdown but he hasn’t forgotten the dream he had seven years ago and those he has shared the ride with.
“This is what I’ve always wanted, This is what I dreamed of when it was I had a decision to make seven seven years ago. Am I going to continue to chase his football dream or am I going to become a WWE superstar? And I went back and I watched the shows that I love. I watched the Attitude Era. I watched “Stone Cold” Steve Austin. I watched The Rock. I watched these guys when they walked out and that and that glass broke, the people lost their minds and got out their seats. When you heard “Can you smell what The Rock is cooking? People got out their seats and they got moving. When The Rock grabbed that microphone, everybody was tuned in. He had complete control. Its like a choir director when he grabbed a microphone. I said, man, I want to feel that. I want to know what that is like,” Trick told The Battleground Podcast about the choice that changed the course of his life.
Trick played for the South Carolina Gamecocks for two years alongside his brothers. Since he went undrafted he took on a coaching role until he played in The Spring League and attended the Philadelphia Eagles rookie minicamp on a tryout basis.
“When I jumped in this business, I said I want to make the people feel something. So when my music plays, I want people standing up. I want the energy live. When
I grab a microphone I want people to listen. I want them to have a conversation with me just like I’m having a conversation with them. So for all these
things to be here now, like this is why I’m here. This is what I wanted to do all along. I can see it clear as day, twenty-twenty vision. This is who I am, this is what I want to be.
So it’s a cool moment,” he said about his rise from NXT to the WWE main roster.
One key person who has been an important part of Trick’s journey is Joe Hendry. Trick showered praise on the current NXT Champion.
“I’m happy for Joe Hendry, you know what I mean? He’s an extraordinary talent and dare I say a self-made man. He got out the mud, took full control of his situation, hands on with his entrance, with his presentation, with his character, with his entering work and look at what he’s done. You cannot take that lightly. Shout out to Joe Hendry. I give him all the love and respect until you put him in the ring with me and then he has to come in second place,” he said.
As he prepares to be part of the Elimination Chamber show this Saturday, Trick is glad to step out of the shadow of the current WWE United States Champion, Carmelo Hayes.
“You know, I see a lot of the comments online. Inevitably when you hop on your timeline, people are going to talk, you know what I mean? If you care about the craft you might look and I see negative comments all the time. I see positive comments all the time. Regardless, the sun is going to rise the next day and I have to get back to work. I have goals. I have dreams. I had a vision before I teamed up with Melo, after I was with Melo, to achieve so it doesn’t really matter what anybody says. I ain’t got there yet so I’m gonna keep grinding,” he said.
