Tony Khan has opened up on joining the bidding war for WWE.
Back in March, it was revealed that Tony Khan made a $6.9 billion bid for WWE when it went up for sale in 2023. However, the bid was unsuccessful, and WWE was eventually sold to Endeavor for $8.5 billion, paving the way for the merger with UFC that created the TKO Group, which the promotion is part of today.
During an appearance on The Coach & Bro podcast, the AEW President was asked why he decided to throw his hat in the ring and make a play for his rival.
“I was very interested in the process. And I think that if there was going to be a sale, I at least wanted to have a chance to be involved. And if it had gone for any less than that, I would have really kicked myself.”
While there have been complaints from some quarters about the transparency of the sale process, Khan said that he had no complaints about how it was organised.
“While respecting the confidentiality of that, I would say that I don’t have any complaints about that process from my side that I would want to talk about right now. You know, I do think there was some stuff to that.
“And while respecting the confidentiality of the whole thing, I would also say that at the time, that seemed like, to me, just reiterating, if it had gone for any less, I would have beat myself up. Like, why wouldn’t you put in a bid? I thought that was a very reasonable number that I put in.”
Tony Khan Explains Shane McMahon Meeting
During the same interview, Tony Khan spoke about his meeting with Shane McMahon in 2024. While there was speculation at the time that McMahon wanted a role in the company, Khan says he didn’t get the impression he wanted to be an on-screen character.
There has been no communication between the two since then, with Khan saying they just had “one really pleasant conversation” at an airport.
