Tony Khan has discussed the possibility of women’s matches main-eventing AEW pay-per-views.
Since AEW made its debut in 2019, a recurring criticism of the promotion has been how the women’s division has been handled. Perception of the division has changed over the past two years, with the rise of ‘Timeless’ Toni Storm, the arrival of Mercedes Mone, and more focus being put on women’s matches and rivalries; however, many fans believe more improvements can still be made.
One specific issue often raised is that women have never been in the main event of an AEW pay-per-view in the past six years. This is despite the women’s division being a highlight of the product in 2024-2025, and high-profile matches like the ‘Hollywood Ending’ between Mariah May and Toni Storm at Revolution 2025, as well as Storm and Mone’s Women’s World Title match at All In Texas.
In a new interview with The Takedown on SI, Tony Khan was asked about the lack of women’s main events on AEW PPVs. Addressing Storm and Mone’s match at All In, the AEW President said that it was presented as “one of the main matches on the card” and could have been the main event.
“It’s very potentially possible. It has to be the right match, the right situation, at the right time. If there were ever two that could do it, it would be the two you mentioned, But there’s a bunch of other candidates for it as well. And, it was a fantastic match. They had it All In: Texas. That was a main-event-caliber match. And it really felt that way. And it was presented as one of the main matches on the card.”
“You know, there were three key matches distributed down, and there were multiple other matches that I think could have easily been main event matches on the card. But there were six faces that we put up on GlobeLife Field, three matches, and [they were] Toni Storm, Mercedes, Omega, Okada, and Hangman and Mox. Any one of those could have been a great main event.”
“It Just Depends On The Situation, The Rivalry At The Right Time” – Tony Khan On Women Main Eventing An AEW PPV
At All Out in September, Toni Storm lost the Women’s World Title to Kris Statlander in a Four-Way match that also featured Jamie Hayter and Thekla. The main event of that show saw Adam Page successfully defend the Men’s World Title against then-TNT Champion Kyle Fletcher.
When asked about the decision to have Fletcher and Page main event the show, Tony Khan said it came down to what they had planned, but added he expects to see women main event a show “where it makes most sense.”
“Well, it just depends on the situation, the rivalry at the right time. I think it’s a great point, a great question. And, you know, for what the matches are, and in that case, I thought for what they were going to do, going 38 minutes, tearing the house down on that particular night, I thought ‘Hangman’ and Kyle was a great choice,”
“And knowing what they had planned, and a lot of times that comes down to it. I think it’s absolutely something we can see, and I would expect to see, in the future, on the night where it makes the most sense, and it’s the biggest and most anticipated match on that card.”
The next opportunity for a women’s main event will be at AEW Revolution, which Tony Khan recently announced will return to Los Angeles in March 2026.
