WWE Hall of Famer The Undertaker recently reflected on the widely criticised tag team match that saw D-Generation X face The Brothers of Destruction at WWE Crown Jewel 2018.
The bout reunited The Undertaker and Kane against Shawn Michaels and Triple H in Saudi Arabia, marking Michaels’ return to the ring after years of retirement. While the match featured major star power from the Attitude Era, it quickly became infamous among fans for several botches and visible struggles from the veteran performers.
Speaking on his Six Feet Under podcast, Undertaker discussed the match with guest Michael “P.S.” Hayes and admitted that he knew going into the contest that he was not physically at his best.
“I knew, like, physically I wasn’t where I should be,” Undertaker said. “We’ll forget about Saudi and that… catastrophe.”
The match has since become something the participants rarely speak about positively, but Undertaker said it has now become easier to look back on the situation with humour.
“Now, it’s like, I wanna laugh. I need to laugh about something,” he said. “Who has on their bingo card that Shawn Michaels, Triple H, Kane, and Undertaker have a complete bomb of a match? Everything that could go wrong was gonna go wrong in that match, and it did.”
Why Did The Undertaker Want To Continue Wrestling At That Point In His Career?
The Undertaker also revealed that part of the motivation behind continuing to wrestle at that stage of his career was his desire to end his in-ring run on a high note.
“Personally, I was like ‘Chasing the Dragon,’ I was looking for that one match to hang my hat on and say, ‘That’s it, bang!’ Like Shawn had,” Undertaker explained.
He referenced his WrestleMania encounters with Michaels at WrestleMania 25 and WrestleMania 26, two matches widely regarded as among the greatest in WWE history.
“Shawn had the perfect two, you know, those last two matches we had,” Undertaker said.
The Undertaker would eventually retire from in-ring competition following his cinematic Boneyard Match victory over AJ Styles at WrestleMania 36.
