The Undertaker revealed that a match between him and Andre the Giant was once seriously considered, and it might have been legendary.
In a 2018 interview on Out of Character with Ed Young, The Undertaker recalled Andre approaching him in the locker room, saying:
“One day, kid, me and you, I have an idea.”
But when Undertaker asked what that idea was, Andre always declined to explain.
“[I’d say] ‘Oh really, boss? Tell me about it!’ ‘Oh no.’ And he would never tell me. He’d never tell me.”
Undertaker said he later asked longtime referee Tim White, who used to drive Andre around, whether he knew any more about the concept, but White was just as unaware. The plan, like many things in Andre’s old-school style, was kept secret even from those close to him.
Because of Andre’s declining health in the years after, the match never happened. Undertaker admitted that he still wonders what the bout might have looked like, adding:
“Nobody knows what it was! He ended up passing away and he never let me know. And I wonder to this day because, man, I bet it was good!”
Even though the match never came to be, the story remains a potent reminder of what might have been: two of wrestling’s greatest giants, never officially sharing the ring, but forever linked by what might have been.
When Did The Undertaker Start Wrestling?
The Undertaker began wrestling professionally in 1984, working under the name Texas Red for World Class Championship Wrestling in Texas. His earliest matches came against seasoned veterans, which helped him develop quickly despite his limited experience at the time.
Over the next several years, he wrestled in various regional promotions, including Memphis and World Class, before joining WCW in 1989 and eventually making his breakthrough in WWE in 1990.
