Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is set to bring the story of Paige back to life in a new format, with plans now in place to adapt Fighting With My Family into a stage musical.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, The Rock will reunite with Stephen Merchant to develop the project, which is based on Paige’s rise through the wrestling industry. The original film was released in 2019, with Florence Pugh portraying Paige.
Merchant, who directed the film, explained that he always viewed the story as having musical elements, pointing to its structure and emotional arc.
“A young woman from the ‘chorus line’ fighting to get her big break, surrounded by theatrical, larger-than-life characters and huge sweeping emotions,” Merchant said. “I approached each wrestling match like it was a different dance number… seeing the film reimagined for the stage feels like the natural next step.”
Johnson echoed that sentiment, highlighting the connection between wrestling and live performance as a key factor in the decision.
“Fighting With My Family is exceptionally well-suited for the stage,” Johnson said. “It’s packed with personal emotion expressed through the dynamic world of wrestling, which has always been about storytelling and connecting with a live audience.”
The Rock Believes Fighting With My Family’s Story Has A Lot Of Potential As A Musical
The Rock also reflected on working with Merchant on the original project, adding that the story’s transition to a musical format has strong potential.
“As it comes to life musically, I have no doubt it will be an absolute blast for theatre-goers.”
The project marks the latest development in bringing Paige’s story to new audiences, years after the film’s original release.
