The Miz has revealed that he once pitched an ambitious WWE WrestleMania storyline that would have culminated in him facing The Ultimate Warrior.
The Ultimate Warrior was one of WWE’s biggest stars during the late 1980s and early 1990s, capturing both the WWE Championship and Intercontinental Championship during his career. His history with the latter title led The Miz to include him in an idea designed to elevate the championship.
Speaking to TMZ, Miz explained that he had become frustrated with the perception that the Intercontinental Championship was a secondary or “throwaway” title. He wanted to establish himself as the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time by defeating former holders of the championship.
“I pitched the fact that I wanted to beat every single Intercontinental Champion, so I can be the greatest Intercontinental Champion of all time,” Miz recalled.
The Miz Wanted A Surprise Match Against The Ultimate Warrior At WrestleMania
His proposed storyline would have led to a Gauntlet Lumberjack match at WrestleMania featuring former Intercontinental Champions. After defeating each of them, The Miz envisioned declaring himself the ultimate champion before The Ultimate Warrior made a surprise appearance.
“I pitched a Gauntlet Lumberjack match, WrestleMania, I beat ’em all, I’m the Ultimate Champion and then The Ultimate Warrior’s music plays, he runs down, hits three clotheslines, splashes me, 1, 2, 3, beats me.”
Miz did not explain why WWE ultimately decided against moving forward with the proposed storyline.
It is also unclear exactly when the idea was pitched. Warrior died in 2014 at the age of 54, shortly after being inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame.
Based on The Miz’s championship history, one potential period for the proposed storyline would have been during his 85-day Intercontinental Championship reign that began on July 23, 2012. His next lengthy reign with the title did not begin until three months after Warrior’s death.
