The Great Khali has claimed WWE deliberately changed his on-screen character after he expressed a desire to leave the company.
Speaking on Insight with Chris Van Vliet, the WWE Hall of Famer alleged that Vince McMahon repositioned him as a comedy act to undermine his character’s credibility.
“After WWE finds out Khali wants to leave, so then he made me a comedy wrestler, because he wants to kill my character,” Khali said.
The former World Heavyweight Champion argued that his popularity in India demonstrated the level of star power he had during the peak of his WWE run.
“When I started wrestling in WWE, all of India watched wrestling. Everyone, kids, women, men, young and old,” Khali said before reiterating his belief that the creative change came after WWE learned he wanted to leave. So he’s thinking he wants to leave, so he made me a comedy wrestler.”

The Great Khali transitioned into a more comedic role during the latter years of his WWE career, taking part in several light-hearted segments, including the popular “Kiss Cam.”
Despite his comments regarding the change in direction, Khali spoke positively about his overall WWE experience, crediting the company with changing his life and making it clear that he has no desire to criticise the promotion.
