Shawn Michaels has revealed how the “Heartbreak Kid” nickname first emerged, crediting Curt Hennig with introducing the phrase during a commentary appearance.
Speaking in a sit-down interview with Triple H for Variety, Shawn Michaels detailed the early development of his singles persona following the split of The Rockers, including an initial concept that nearly took his character in a different direction.
“There was still a form of creative services, and someone had drawn up this biker guy with the glasses and sort of my first original look,” Michaels said. “But they wanted to call me the Idol first. It was gonna be Shawn Michaels the Idol, but then it was just gonna go straight to the Idol. And that just really scared me, because I didn’t want to ever stop being Shawn Michaels.”
Michaels explained that while he accepted elements of the visual presentation, he resisted dropping his name, opting instead to allow the character to evolve more naturally through his performances, entrance music, and promos. The turning point came when Curt Hennig, better known to fans as Mr Perfect, referenced the “Heartbreak Kid” phrase during commentary, something Michaels said was not planned but ultimately proved significant.
“Hennig mentions the Heartbreak Kid during color commentary one time,” Michaels said.
Shawn Michaels Confirmed That Mr Perfect Came Up With The “Heartbreak Kid” Nickname
Triple H responded by admitting he had never known the origin of the nickname, prompting Shawn Michaels to confirm Hennig’s role in its creation.
“Curt Hennig, not shocking,” Michaels said. “Well, it’s in a Chris LeDoux song. ‘Used to be a moonlight bandit, used to be a Heartbreak Kid.’ When he first told me about it, I was like, all right… I wasn’t sure. But then I was just doing a promo one time, and all of a sudden… it just comes out. From that point on, it kind of stuck.”
Michaels added that the character resonated because it drew from aspects of his personality that he could tap into when performing, even if it was not a full reflection of who he was away from the ring.
“As somebody who knows me in real life, I don’t have that much coolness. For that moment in that place out there, I could do it. And so it just all seemed to work.”
