Sami Zayn is reportedly dealing with a legitimate hand injury after revealing on WWE television that he had suffered a broken bone.
Sami Zayn referenced the injury during a backstage segment on the August 7 episode of SmackDown, where he was involved in an exchange with CM Punk, Johnny Gargano and Candice LeRae. According to Mike Johnson of PWInsider, the injury is legitimate and is not simply part of a WWE storyline. During the segment, Zayn told Punk that his broken hand was preventing him from becoming physical with the Undisputed WWE Champion.
“I have a broken bone in my hand, but if I didn’t…” Zayn said. “Understand this, Punk. If I didn’t, I would break your face right now.”
Sami Zayn Has Not Wrestled Since WWE SummerSlam
Sami Zayn has been absent from in-ring competition since the second night of SummerSlam on August 2. The former Undisputed WWE Champion competed in a four-way match against Gunther, Finn Balor and Kevin Owens, with the winner earning a future opportunity at the WWE Championship.
Zayn’s previous televised match took place at Saturday Night’s Main Event on July 18. He teamed with Gunther on that show but lost to CM Punk and Cody Rhodes. The injury comes after a significant period at the top of the WWE card for Zayn. He entered July as Undisputed WWE Champion before losing the championship to Punk on the July 6 episode of Raw.
Zayn has not competed since SummerSlam, and WWE has yet to announce when he is expected to receive medical clearance to return to the ring. While WWE has now incorporated his broken hand into its television, the latest report indicates the injury is genuine.
