Rusev has opened up about life after wrestling, and his long-term plans could see him step into a very different spotlight once his in-ring career comes to an end.
The former United States Champion recently discussed his future goals, including a potential move back to his home country and an unexpected career path outside of the ring. Speaking on Insight With Chris Van Vliet, Rusev revealed he hopes to return to Bulgaria and eventually run for mayor of his hometown, Plovdiv. To prepare for that possibility, he plans to go back to school to study public administration and learn more about the country’s political system.
“I wanted to be mayor of my hometown, involved in Bulgaria. Yeah, I don’t mind moving back home. I don’t mind,” Rusev said. “I just missed signing up because I wanted to go back to school, but I missed the enrollment date. So next year, I’m definitely signing up. I’m going to school for public administration and Bulgaria school because I want to learn their system and go from there.”
Rusev also discussed his in-ring future, explaining that he intends to reassess his career when he turns 45.
“I said 45 and then reevaluate the body, see how it feels,” he said. “But so far, I feel great. I haven’t felt that good in a long time, because it’s not like you have matches every day. So the body is way more protected. I take care of my body a lot more. I do a lot of stretching and massages. I eat a lot better. I train a lot smarter.”
What Did Rusev Say He And His Wife Are Up To Outside Of Wrestling?
Outside of wrestling, Rusev and his wife Lana are currently going through the IVF process as they look to start a family, something he described as the next chapter of his life. He also reflected on his career journey, expressing gratitude for the support he has received.
“I thank God. I thank my wife. I thank the wrestling fans,” Rusev said, noting his 21-year journey in the United States. “I’m excited for the future, in and out of the ring.”
