The semifinals are officially set in the tournament to determine Roman Reigns‘ next challenger for the World Heavyweight Championship.
Dragon Lee and Rey Fenix both advanced during this week’s episode of Raw, joining Penta and La Parka in the final four. The tournament winner will receive a World Heavyweight Championship match against Roman Reigns on the September 14 episode of Raw in Mexico City.
Fenix secured his place in the semifinals by defeating El Fiscal. After a competitive encounter, Fenix put his opponent away with a Mexican Muscle Buster to advance. Dragon Lee booked his place later in the show against El Hijo de Dr Wagner Jr. Wagner came close to winning on several occasions, including after connecting with a Frog Splash and superplex, but Lee eventually countered his opponent and hit Operation Dragon for the victory.
The results mean Fenix and Lee will now face each other on the August 24 episode of Raw, with the winner advancing to the tournament final.
Penta & La Parka Will Also Compete For A Shot At Roman Reigns’ WWE World Heavyweight Title
On the other side of the bracket, Penta will face La Parka to determine the second finalist. Penta became the first wrestler to qualify when he defeated Laredo Kid on last week’s Raw. However, his pursuit of Roman Reigns’ championship has since become connected to another developing storyline in AAA.
Penta appeared on Saturday’s episode of AAA and was confronted by members of Los Perros del Mal. Daga attempted to recruit Penta into the group, arguing that he would need their support if he won the tournament and earned the opportunity to challenge Reigns.
Daga gave Penta until the end of the show to decide. When the time came, Penta stopped short of accepting or rejecting the offer. Instead, he questioned whether there was any “dead weight” within Los Perros del Mal.
The comment angered Bronco Nima, who responded by challenging Penta to a match on next week’s AAA show. A stipulation was subsequently agreed upon. If Penta defeats Nima, he will not be required to join Los Perros del Mal. However, if Nima wins, Penta must join the group.
Penta accepted the terms, adding another match to his schedule as he continues his pursuit of a World Heavyweight Championship opportunity against Roman Reigns. The tournament semifinals will take place on next week’s Raw, with Fenix facing Lee and Penta taking on La Parka.
