Brian “Road Dogg” James, who most recently worked as the co-lead writer for WWE SmackDown, has been announced for several upcoming events after stepping away from his backstage role.
Road Dogg is scheduled to appear at the Squared Circle Expo in Indianapolis, Indiana, on March 27 and 28, marking his first advertised public appearances since leaving the WWE creative staff.
Another appearance is also set for later this year. James will reunite with longtime tag team partner Billy Gunn as The New Age Outlaws at GLCW’s Blizzard Brawl 21 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, this December.
James’ departure from WWE creative reportedly followed an annual performance review. According to reports, the Hall of Famer decided to leave after receiving feedback during that process, though only James himself knows the full reasons behind the move.
Dave Meltzer Revealed Why Road Dogg Left WWE Creative
Dave Meltzer reported in the Wrestling Observer Newsletter that the exit came after a period of tension regarding outside bookings. The situation reportedly centred on a convention appearance Road Dogg had planned for late March. WWE management initially granted permission for the booking, but that approval was later withdrawn, forcing him to cancel his participation.
Following that cancellation, James reportedly indicated that his schedule would not be restricted by the company in the near future.
“James got his annual review. The belief is that he wasn’t happy with it and left,” Meltzer wrote. “He may say he left over something else, and only he would know exactly why he did so. But it was his decision, and it came after his annual review.”
