Rick ‘Sign Guy’ Achberger Passes Away

One of the most famous wrestling fans of them all, Rick Achberger, has passed away. Most remember him fondly by his nickname: “Sign Guy”.

Lance Peterson of WCCW World ClassCast made the announcement on X.

“It’s with a heavy heart that I announce the passing of WWE Sign Guy Rick Achberger, today Sunday 9/27/26. He was an absolute great guy and loved talking with fans at the shows. He tackled some health problems a couple of years ago, but last month began to go downhill rapidly. Rest in peace,” he wrote.

Achberger became a familiar sight to wrestling fans in the 2000s. On wrestling broadcasts he was instantly recognizable in the crowd with his red hat, a jean shirt…and of course all of the signs he would display for the cameras.

Achberger at one time was a Lumberjacks basketball player and the WWE reported that he had attended well over 1,000 WWE shows in his lifetime.

Back in 2007, he even appeared on an episode of Deal or No Deal in which John Cena and Bobby Lashley cheered him on and Edge and Randy Orton booed him.

“I’m obsessed with WWE — World Wrestling Entertainment. Not only do I watch the programs all the time each week, I go to probably about 30 or 40 live WWE events pretty much all over the country,” he said on the show.

He explained how the superstars began to recognize him and work him into angles.

“I wear this same red hat and blue shirt so [the Superstars] know ‘Oh, it’s that moron Sign Guy again.’ They come over, they rip signs up, they dump water on me. It’s a blast. It’s an adrenaline rush. I’m just obsessed with it, man!” he said.

His commentary was also part of the The History of WWE – 50 Years of Sports Entertainment DVD released by the WWE back in 2013.

Triple H posted a tribute to Achberger.

“Saddened to hear of the death of Rick Achberger, known to the WWE Universe as ‘Sign Guy.’ For decades, Rick was a fixture at events holding a sign that expressed exactly how he felt about you that given evening. He will be missed by the entire @WWE
family. We send condolences to his family and friends.”

Bayley wrote: “I watched Sign Guy when I was just a kid, I even remember him being interviewed on WWE Confidential. Felt like I really made it when he started making signs for me. I’m so thankful for all the fun memories we have throughout the years. The wrestling world will miss you, Rick.”

Hurricane Helms stated: “WWE Sign Guy got me good at a house show once. It was during my Gregory Helms run, he had a sign that read “HELMS IS GOD.” As I went to acknowledge that, he unfolded the rest of the sign so that it read “HELMS IS GOD … AWFUL.” Gonna miss your silliness bro.”

Gail Kim-Irvine wrote: “I can’t believe the news today about Sign Guy @RickWWESignGuy he was always so fun, knew how to get the crowd going and a great fan. He was such a wonderful man and I’m glad I got to know him throughout the years. RIP Rick …. We will miss you.”

Big E’s tribute read: “Very sorry to hear of Sign Guy’s passing. Always looked forward to seeing his signature red hat and blue shirt. Our interactions were always fun and light-hearted. My sincerest condolences to Rick and his loved ones.”

Trey Miguel wrote: “The “WWE SIGN GUY” Rich Archberger passed away He was always so freaking supportive of me. Always had a Trey Miguel sign at TNA events he attended and was a nice guy to talk to. We lost a good one. Easily one of the most famous fans of all time. You will be missed brother.”
