Rey Mysterio has admitted he ‘almost tapped out’ from his wrestling career several years ago.
At 51 years old, Rey Mysterio is still one of the best wrestlers in the world and still works a full-time schedule in WWE. However, that might not have been the case if Dominik Mysterio had not followed his father into pro wrestling.
During an interview on The Late Run, Mysterio explained that he felt burned out both physically and mentally around five years ago, and was considering hanging up his boots.
“I actually do remember a point that happened in my life. Not too long ago, maybe about five or six years, I just wasn’t getting that same emotion when I would step into the ring. I think my body was burnt out mentally and physically.
“I told my wife, I remember sitting down with her and telling her, ‘I don’t feel what I would always feel everytime I would step into the ring, I think I’m going to tap out. I just don’t feel it anymore.’”
Then, Dominik told his father that he wanted to start wrestling, and it gave Mysterio the inspiration he needed to continue as well.
“Shortly after, my son told me that he wanted to try and break into the business. Seeing him or helping him get on board kind of just inspired or ignited me that fire once again and it’s been going since.”
Dominik Mysterio made his in-ring WWE debut at SummerSlam in 2020 as part of Rey’s feud with Seth Rollins. From there, he formed a tag team with his father, and the pair were the first father-son duo to win the SmackDown Tag Team Titles.
Rey Mysterio’s Daughter Aalyah Set To Train At WWE Performance Centre
Recently, Rey Mysterio revealed that his daughter will report to the WWE Performance Centre full-time this year. Mysterio said Aalyah had been bitten by the wrestling bug some time ago, but he wanted her to wait until she graduated from UC San Diego before making any decisions. Soon after graduation, she told her father she was ready and is now preparing to establish herself at the PC.
