Dustin Poirier is calling for 40-year-old Michael Chandler to retire.
Chandler lost handily to Mauricio Ruffy at UFC Freedom 250. The fight was stopped by strikes at only 4:29 of the first round. Chandler really didn’t mount much of an offence at all.
At the end of June, Chandler posted a video to Instagram in which he said: “We lost. You’re going to take your losses in life and hopefully, for you, you don’t take too many losses but it’s not about taking the losses it’s how you respond to the losses. If you can see every loss like it was an opportunity that was missed and there’s a recalibration and a recoiling of the spring that you can bounce back from, bounce back better, bounce back in a different way, bounce back with more wisdom, bounce back with more experience, you can continue to chase down the man or the woman that you were destined to be and that’s why we’re out here.”
On the Deep Waters Paramount+ UFC podcast Poirier asked the question: “I want to know what he’s fighting for?”.
He then explained why many fighters go on far longer than they should.
“Everybody around them knows it’s time to hang them up. The fighter’s the last one to know…The problem is, power is the last thing to go and we all think we could land that shot that ends the fight at any time. So it keeps people coming back,” he said.
If Chandler is returning, Poirier knows what he wants to see.
“If Conor recovers and has a fight left on his contract Chandler was trailed along with the Conor fight,” he said.
