Penta moved one step closer to Intercontinental gold on the February 16 edition of WWE Raw, but the circumstances surrounding his victory were anything but straightforward.
Penta defeated El Grande Americano to become the new number one contender to the WWE Intercontinental Championship. The closing moments saw Rayo and Bravo attempt to interfere on behalf of Americano, only for the original El Grande Americano to appear and lay out both impostors. With the distraction creating an opening, Penta capitalised by delivering a Mexican Destroyer to secure the pinfall and his title shot against Dominik Mysterio.
The situation was set in motion earlier in the night. The second Americano approached Raw General Manager Adam Pearce, complaining that the original Americano had been granted an Elimination Chamber qualifying match for the following week. He demanded a similar opportunity, but Pearce refused, instead placing him in a number one contender’s bout later in the show against a mystery opponent, who was revealed to be Penta.
When Did Dominik Mysterio Win The WWE Intercontinental Title?
Dominik Mysterio first won the WWE Intercontinental Championship in April, when he captured the title at WrestleMania 41. John Cena defeated him for the championship on the November 10 edition of Raw, Mysterio reclaimed the title weeks later at Survivor Series with help from a returning Liv Morgan.
Penta is now set to challenge for the championship, though the fallout from the Americano confusion may not be over just yet.
