Oba Femi says everybody was surprised to see Brock Lesnar name him as the future of WWE.
At SummerSlam Night One, Oba Femi defeated Brock Lesnar inside Hell in a Cell, bringing their trilogy of matches to a close. Following the bout, Lesnar got back in the ring and hugged Femi before raising The Ruler’s arm and declaring him to be “the future of WWE.”
Reflecting on that moment in a new interview on ABC 33/40, Femi admitted that he had no idea what Lesnar had in mind when he walked back to the ring, but was happy to be endorsed by the Beast Incarnate.
“I remember I see him and his wide back walking away, I’m like, ‘Wow, that was tough.’ Then I see him spin the block, I’m like, ‘Oh, man, what’s going on? What do we have now?’ Then he walks back, I’m on guard, like, ‘Oh, it could be anything!’
“Then he comes in and it’s this big endorsement, very out of character for him. It’s this huge moment, so I’m happy that he trusted enough in his choice to even come back and not just implicitly tell them through the match, but explicitly say, ‘This is our guy.'”
When asked if anyone knew what was happening, Oba Femi said it was a shock to everyone involved in the event.
“Not at all. Nobody saw it coming, the camera guys, everybody was taken aback. Everybody was surprised that in the 25-year career of Brock Lesnar, he’s never done anything like that.”
Paul Heyman Believes Brock Lesnar Has Retired For Good
While Brock Lesnar teased retirement after Oba Femi defeated him at WrestleMania 42, he returned to face The Ruler twice more before officially announcing he was hanging up his boots after SummerSlam.
While fans are unsure if Lesnar will renege on retirement again, like many wrestlers have done in the past, Paul Heyman said in a recent interview that “this was it.” Lesnar’s former advocate said that in the past it had been easy to get Lesnar back in the ring, but this time felt different and he is “accepting of the reality of the situation.”
