Nick Aldis‘ wife, Mickie James, has described his long-awaited WWE in-ring debut at SummerSlam as a “dream come true” despite his defeat to Gunther.
After spending years as SmackDown‘s General Manager, Nick Aldis finally competed in his first WWE match at SummerSlam Night One, challenging Gunther. Although he came up short, Aldis earned a standing ovation from the crowd before later being reinstated as SmackDown General Manager.
Speaking with MuscleManMalcolm, Mickie James reflected on the emotional moment and said seeing her husband finally step into a WWE ring was especially meaningful for their family.
“Oh my gosh, it was amazing. It’s, you know, it’s the dream come true. I think it’s all the things. Obviously, it didn’t go the way we wanted, but to see him have his moment.”

Mickie James also revealed that their son, Donovan, had become heavily invested in Nick Aldis’ journey back to the ring, even documenting his father’s training in the build-up to SummerSlam.
“We’ve never sat in the crowd like that for a whole match. To see him, and he was so in the front, over the banner the whole time, watching his dad and cheering his dad on. As Nick’s been going to the gym and stuff, Donovan’s been like a little film guy, documenting the whole thing. So he’s been really a part of this whole journey.”
James added that the experience created a special bond between father and son and praised Aldis for the work he put in to make his WWE in-ring debut a reality.
“It’s just been such a cool bond, and to be there for it, it’s really special. I know he worked really hard for it and he deserved it. It just proved that he belongs.”
Prior to SummerSlam, Aldis had not wrestled since 2023, making his return to in-ring competition one of the standout moments of the weekend.
