Matt Hardy has claimed that WWE removed The Hardy Boyz from television in late 2001 as punishment after his brother Jeff Hardy refused to participate in certain proposed storylines.
The legendary tag team disappeared from WWF programming in December 2001 after an angle involving The Undertaker and didn’t return until the Royal Rumble in January 2002.
Although the brothers continued competing at non-televised live events, Matt Hardy has now suggested that their absence was directly connected to Jeff Hardy’s unwillingness to follow WWE’s creative plans.
Speaking during a recent interview with The Stunner, Matt reflected on the circumstances surrounding The Hardys’ temporary removal from television. According to Matt, WWE had been planning to separate the brothers and pursue individual storylines, but Jeff was uncomfortable with some of the creative ideas.
“There was a storyline for our characters, and they wanted us to split up. And there was a couple things that we were asked to do, and Jeff was uncomfortable and didn’t want to do it,” Matt explained.
“So we were off TV for a while, as a punishment, I guess. But we still did live events, and then they put us back together because we knew we weren’t ready to separate and split up as a team yet.”
Matt did not reveal the specific storyline ideas Jeff rejected, though he suggested he knew considerably more about the situation than he was willing to discuss publicly. When asked whether he could share more about the proposed creative direction, Matt offered a cryptic response.
“Yes, but nothing I can say on here because I would like to stay married.”
The comments suggest that the rejected storylines involved sensitive material, although Matt provided no further explanation. The Hardys were written off WWF television in December 2001 following attacks by The Undertaker.
They remained absent from televised programming until January 20, 2002, when they returned at the Royal Rumble. Despite their absence from television, both brothers continued fulfilling their commitments at WWE live events.
WWE Eventually Split Jeff & Matt Hardy In 2002
Although The Hardys initially remained together following their return, WWE eventually separated the brothers during the summer of 2002. Jeff Hardy moved into singles competition and became involved in a memorable rivalry with The Undertaker.
Meanwhile, Matt developed his Matt Hardy Version 1 character, which became a significant part of his singles career. The character eventually led to Matt capturing the WWE Cruiserweight Championship in February 2003.
Jeff’s initial WWE run ended in April 2003 when he was released from the company. He subsequently joined TNA Wrestling. WWE also released Matt in April 2005, though it rehired him several months later.
Jeff eventually returned to WWE in August 2006, setting the stage for another reunion between the brothers. The Hardys reunited on WWE television that November, resuming their partnership after several years pursuing separate careers.
