A new documentary spotlighting one of wrestling’s most unique figures, Luna Vachon, continues to gain momentum, with another high-profile screening now confirmed.
Lunatic: The Luna Vachon Story is set to screen at the Sunscreen Film Festival in St. Petersburg, Florida, from April 30 to May 3, 2026. The film, directed by Vancouver-based filmmaker and wrestler Kate Kroll, has received strong reviews since its premiere at the Canadian Film Festival in March 2025.
The documentary traces Vachon’s life and career, from her roots in a legendary wrestling family to her rise across promotions including ECW, WCW and WWE. It highlights her role in pushing women’s wrestling forward during a period when it was often treated as a novelty, positioning her as a key influence on the modern era.
Kroll began developing the project in 2019 and has spoken about the depth of Vachon’s story, which spans multiple generations of wrestling while also addressing personal struggles.
“Luna has so many layers,” Kroll said. “Her story takes us through a long span of the evolution of women’s wrestling… I thought she’s got a story that everyone can relate to, even if you don’t know anything about wrestling.”
The film features interviews with a wide range of figures from the industry, including Gangrel, Kevin Sullivan and Jacqueline Moore, along with rare archival footage, including previously unseen material from the 1980s promotion Wild Women of Wrestling.
Critics Have Reacted Well To The Luna Vachon Documentary
Critics have responded positively to the documentary’s approach, praising its balance in exploring both Luna Vachon’s in-ring legacy and personal life without reducing her story to a cautionary tale. Reviews have highlighted its focus on her impact, as well as the challenges she faced, including mental health struggles and addiction.
The documentary has already screened at multiple festivals and earned a nomination for Best Canadian Documentary at the Vancouver Film Critics Circle Awards in February 2026. While the film continues its festival run, Kroll is still seeking a wider streaming release in the United States. In Canada, it is currently available on demand.
Vachon, who died in 2010, was posthumously inducted into multiple halls of fame, including WWE’s Legacy wing, with her influence on women’s wrestling continuing to be recognised years after her career ended.
