It appears that United States Secretary of Education Linda McMahon needs to do her homework when it comes to the history of video games.
Instead of highlighting a seminal moment as she hoped to do, McMahon’s recent post drew the ire of gamers, fans.
On X she wrote: “In 2005, everything changed! The “PlayStation Portable” (PSP) was released and it did more than make gaming portable…it made entertainment personal, mobile, and always within reach. It was the beginning of life on the go.”

Of course, any gamer can tell you that the PSP (PlayStation Portable) was released in 2005 and was a portable entertainment device which allowed owners to buy movies and entire TV series on UMDs (Universal Media Disc) and watch them anywhere. Approximately, 450 movies and 200 TV shows were released over the lifetime of the PSP.
However, the PSP was not “It was the beginning of life on the go.” There were many portable video game devices featuring one game such as Mattel Electronic Football which was released in 1977. Milton Bradley’s Microvision which came out in 1979 was the first device to feature game cartridges. Things really didn’t take off though until the eighties when Nintendo released the Game Boy.
A number of X users pointed this fact out to McMahon in response to her post:
What an odd thing for Linda McMahon to post out of nowhere.

You used the incorrect picture though. That’s the original PlayStation. This is the PSP. pic.twitter.com/wUjhWqSp8l

Greetings, tomodatchi! I, too, am hip and like to get down with Mario on my PlayStation Portable. Life sure was jive before those mobile cellular telephones, eh? pic.twitter.com/hduLnfH6Ci
