Kyle Fletcher has admitted to feeling imposter syndrome after surpassing Cody Rhodes’ TNT Championship reign in AEW.
During his time in AEW, Cody Rhodes became synonymous with the TNT Championship. As the inaugural champion, The American Nightmare had eight successful title defences during an 82-day reign. He defeated the likes of Ricky Starks, ‘Jungle’ Jack Perry, and Eddie Kingston before finally falling to Brodie Lee. While Rhodes went on to hold the title twice more before departing the company in 2022, he never reached the heights of that initial run.
The current TNT Champion, Kyle Fletcher, has already surpassed the length of Rhodes’ first reign but is on the verge of breaking his title defense record. At Full Gear, he will put the gold on the line against Mark Briscoe in his ninth defence.
Kyle Fletcher Believes He Is On The Right Path In AEW
Speaking to TMZ, Fletcher admitted that the idea of surpassing Rhodes has given him a sense of imposter syndrome.
“Proclaiming that I’m the greatest TNT champion of all time and surpassing Cody as well as Miro and Darby in reigns, it’s a weird sense of imposter syndrome, a little bit to me.
“Cody Rhodes currently is the number one star in probably all of wrestling right now, like the top dog, and to be like, ‘oh, I had… a better championship reign than Cody Rhodes. Look at me.’ Yeah. I don’t know. It’s a bit of a weird feeling, but it’s also very reassuring to me. Like, ‘Oh, I mean, look at me. I’m doing better than Cody Rhodes, better than Miro, better than Darby.’
Fletcher finished by saying his reign makes him feel that he is “moving in the right direction.”
“It’s a weird thing. It’s a weird feeling, but also it reassures me that I’m kind of, I’m on the right path. I’m doing the right thing, moving in the right direction.”
The stakes are high for Kyle Fletcher at Full Gear as he will face Mark Briscoe in a No Disqualification match. Not only that, but if he wins, Briscoe will be forced to join him in the Don Callis Family, while a loss would cost him the TNT Championship.
