Kurt Angle explains what got him really angry just moments before his match at WrestleMania 22 against Randy Orton and Rey Mysterio.
Kurt Angle said, during an interview on the Dos and D, that during the WrestleMania 22 Triple Threat for the World Heavyweight Championship, involving himself, Rey Mysterio and Randy Orton, he became visibly upset in the ring because Mysterio’s elaborate entrance ate into the allotted time for their match.
“I remember at one point in time we had a main event match at WrestleMania. It was Randy Orton, Rey Mysterio, and myself. And Rey pissed me off that night. We had 20 minutes for our match. That’s including entrances. So I rush out in 30 seconds, I get mine over with. Randy comes out in 30 seconds, gets it over with. Rey starts comes out with this outfit on, looked like a bird. And he’s dancing around and then he goes up the scaffold and comes back down. And [he] goes down the ramp and goes around the ring three times.”
Because Mysterio took so long coming to the ring, Angle recalled that the trio ended up with only about 12 minutes left for the actual bout after entrances, instead of the full 20-minute slot. Angle admitted he was angry in the moment, “this motherf**ker!” were his words, but later understood why.
“And I’m like, ‘This motherf**ker!’ We ended up only having 12 minutes for a match, because he took up eight minutes for his entrance. I was like, ‘Man!’ And you know
what I understood after, because it was his moment.”
He conceded that Mysterio’s over-the-top entrance was part of the moment: Mysterio was winning the world title that night, and this was his crowning moment. Angle said that despite his frustration, he felt privileged to lose the championship to Mysterio that night.
“I was honored and privileged to be able to drop the title to him that night. But not only was he representing himself, but he was representing Eddie Guerrero. And I thought that was a great storyline to end that story that way, for sure.”
When Did Kurt Angle Retire?
Kurt Angle officially retired from in-ring competition at WrestleMania 35 on 7 April 2019, where he wrestled Baron Corbin in his farewell match. The bout took place in East Rutherford, New Jersey, marking the end of a career that spanned over two decades across WWE and TNA.
Although he has made occasional appearances on WWE programming since then, Angle has remained retired from active wrestling, focusing instead on media projects and other business ventures.
