Kenny Omega has revealed he came close to stepping away from in-ring competition during his recent health battle, admitting he had made peace with the idea his career could be over.
Speaking with CBC News Manitoba, Kenny Omega discussed his recovery from diverticulitis and how seriously he considered transitioning away from wrestling if his condition did not improve.
“I was at peace with being able to take a huge step back if I needed to,” Omega said. “If I needed to have a complete non-physical role within the company… I was happy to just be involved with this project that is AEW.”
Kenny Omega Said His Openess To Retirement Helped Him During His Recovery
Kenny Omega explained that accepting that possibility helped him remain focused during his recovery, rather than rushing decisions or panicking about his future.
“I think having that sense of calmness and being able to accept the current situation actually helped me put forward more of an effort,” he said. “If I was in panic mode, I would have run around not knowing what to do.”
The former AEW World Champion added that his mindset was centred on giving everything he had to his recovery, regardless of the outcome.
“Just being honest with yourself… and being open-minded to trying new things. If they don’t work, at least you know you tried everything.”
Omega’s comments highlight just how serious his condition had become, with diverticulitis previously forcing him out of action and raising concerns about his long-term future. Now back competing in All Elite Wrestling, Omega’s return marks a significant turnaround after a period where stepping away from the ring appeared to be a real possibility.
