Kenny Omega has secured his next shot at the AEW World Championship following a major victory on Dynamite.
Kenny Omega defeated Swerve Strickland in the opening match of Wednesday’s show, finishing the contest with the One Winged Angel in a decisive win. The result not only avenged his February loss to Strickland but also saw Omega take over as the number one contender.
With the stakes attached to the match, Omega also retained his executive vice president role, which had been put on the line alongside Strickland’s contender status.
Later in the night, Omega confronted AEW World Champion MJF during an in-ring segment. After MJF boasted about his position atop the company, Omega interrupted and issued a challenge for a title match at Dynasty in April. MJF accepted the challenge but declined to shake Omega’s hand before leaving the ring.
MJF Holds The Advantage Over Kenny Omega In Their Previous Encounter
The upcoming match will mark a rematch between the two, who previously faced off during MJF’s first title reign in October 2023. On that occasion, Kenny Omega was attempting to prevent MJF from surpassing his record as the longest-reigning AEW World Champion, but MJF emerged victorious after a lengthy encounter.
Referencing that loss, Omega stated that he was not at full strength at the time, suggesting he was operating at “60 to 80 percent” and promising a different outcome this time around.
Omega now looks to reclaim the AEW World Championship for the first time since losing it to “Hangman” Adam Page in November 2021, while MJF will aim to continue his current reign as Dynasty approaches.
