Kane has revealed that the decision to remove his iconic mask in 2003 was his own idea, driven by a desire to expand his character.
Speaking on the Going Ringside podcast at River City Wrestling Con, Kane said he approached Vince McMahon about unmasking because he believed the character had creative limitations.
“It was my idea. I talked to Vince about it,” he said. “I felt that being under the mask… there were constraints. I couldn’t use my face to show emotion… and I just felt that I could do more.”
He also shared that his original concept for the unmasked character was inspired by The Red Dragon, Thomas Harris’s novel. He envisioned a version of his character whose scars were psychological rather than physical.
“I got this idea from The Red Dragon… the antagonist looked normal, but in his mind he was this horrific, disfigured monster,” he explained. “That’s what I thought it’d be about Kane.”
However, he admitted the idea was never fully realised due to the fast-paced nature of WWE television.
“That kind of got lost, because everything moves so quickly,” he said.

Kane added that while Vince McMahon supported the decision to unmask, he pushed for a more drastic visual change, including shaving Kane’s head to create a darker presentation.
“Vince wanted to make the character really sinister and a complete departure from what it was before,” he said.
The unmasking remains one of the most significant character changes in WWE history.
