Jon Moxley has explained the mentality that helps him keep improving in the ring.
Since arriving in AEW in 2019, Jon Moxley has become one of the biggest stars in the company, with many fans even considering him to be the Ace of the promotion. Maintaining such a high position has taken its toll on the Continental Champion, but he says that it’s all part of the game.
Speaking on Close Up with Renee Paquette, Moxley claimed that if a wrestler is going into matches at 100%, then they aren’t doing their job right.
“If you’re not affected physically and mentally, you’re not doing this job right. If you’re going into any matches 100%, then you’re not doing this job right. It’s just part of the game.
“At this point, for me, pain is just… information. It just… It gives me data. It’s largely ambivalent to it. I’m chasing mastery.”
Jon Moxley Explains His Idea Of “Mastery”
For Moxley, mastery is something to strive for, even though it’s not something that can ever be achieved. The star is aware that as soon as he thinks he has things figured out, pro wrestling will evolve, and he’ll need to learn new things.
“This idea of mastery is not something you’re ever going to hold in your hand. If you do figure everything out, then the game’s going to evolve, and then you’re going to have to learn new things and catch up. It’s just going to keep on spinning infinitely. So there is no end, ever.
“The rewards of that are not external. They’re not what you get. They’re what you become. They’re the person you become in chasing mastery in whatever it is, whatever it is you’re doing.”
Jon Moxley is currently leading the Death Riders in a heated feud with the Don Callis Family. The rivalry will continue on the March 11th edition of Dynamite when he teams with Claudio Castagnoli to take on Konosuke Takeshita and Hechicero.
