Plans for John Cena‘s final match may have revealed a spoiler for tomorrow’s Saturday Night’s Main Event.
Dave Meltzer wrote in the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter about how WWE’s internal plans for John Cena’s retirement may have revealed a spoiler for the Intercontinental Title match set for tomorrow’s Saturday Night’s Main Event. At SNME, Dominik Mysterio is defending his IC Title against Rusev and Penta in a Triple Threat match, but Meltzer wrote that WWE made plans a few weeks ago to have Cena take the title from Mysterio at the upcoming Survivor Series pay-per-view and have him defend the title in his final match against Gunther at the December 13 Saturday Night’s Main Event. Meltzer wrote:
“The fourth match is Dominik Mysterio vs Penta vs. Rusev for the IC title. Mysterio would be the favorite given there was the plan a few weeks ago of John Cena winning that title from Mysterio at Survivor Series and defending against Gunther in his retirement match.”
It has already been reported that WWE has picked Gunther to be Cena’s final opponent, but if they do indeed plan to put the Intercontinental Title on Cena at Survivor Series, it would likely mean that Cena will drop the title to Gunther to start his second reign as the IC champ.
How Many Matches Has John Cena Had In His Retirement Year?
John Cena started his 2025 retirement year tour at the February 1 Royal Rumble event, where he entered the Rumble at number 23 and eliminated Finn Balor, Braun Strowman, and Logan Paul. He and Jey Uso were the final two in the 2025 Rumble, but Cena was unable to win his third Rumble, as Uso eliminated him to win the match.
After the Rumble, Cena has gone on to wrestle 13 more times, with his last match to date being at Crown Jewel on October 11, where he defeated AJ Styles in a match that was very well received by fans and critics, even getting a four-and-three-quarter-star rating from Dave Meltzer.
In recent news, John Cena has spoken about the tournament set to decide his final opponent.
