John Cena may be ending his in-ring career on December 13, but he has confirmed he will remain with WWE for at least the next five years.
Speaking to Tom Rinaldi on WWE’s YouTube channel, John Cena revealed he has signed a five-year ambassador contract that will keep him involved with the company after retirement. He said he intends to contribute behind the scenes and remain part of the WWE family for as long as possible.
“I will be an ambassador to WWE. I am already signed on for another five years. As long as I can do it, I would like to be in this family as an employee and as a contributing part for as long as I can,” Cena said.
Cena added that his focus will now shift towards mentoring talent and helping promote the company in new ways.
“It is not my time to perform anymore. I have a bunch of strengths and gifts that I can pass on. I am looking forward to the second mountain of being an ambassador. Maybe it means getting more people to watch WWE, which was my goal in the first place, and maybe mentorship to talent. I want to sit with people and find the version of them that belongs on TV.”
Cena will wrestle his final match on Saturday Night’s Main Event, where he faces Gunther, who won the “Last Time is Now” tournament by defeating LA Knight in the finals on last Friday’s SmackDown.
When Did John Cena First Sign With WWE?
John Cena signed his first WWE contract in 2001 after making his debut for the company in a dark match on the October 10, 2000, episode of SmackDown. He wrestled in WWE’s developmental territory, Ohio Valley Wrestling, for just over a year before making his official TV debut on the June 27, 2002, episode of SmackDown against Kurt Angle.
Cena has gone on to become one of WWE’s most successful stars of the past two decades, capturing 17 world titles and being the company’s top merch seller for numerous years.
