John Cena has announced the month his namesake event will take place.
At Backlash in May, Cena announced that WWE would hold the John Cena Classic, an event featuring NXT talent taking on main roster stars in exhibition matches. At the end of the night, fans will be able to vote on which star becomes the ‘John Cena Classic Champion,’ regardless of whether they won their match.
In September, Cena said he would keep the details a secret until it was the right time to announce the event. Now, during an appearance on TODAY, the 17-time World Champion has revealed that the Classic will take place in December.
“This year in December, I’m really excited about announcing the John Cena Classic. So we’re gonna do an event, based off all the memory, all the nostalgia, the IP and the core values of the character, which is me: Hustle, loyalty, respect, perseverance, virtue, overcoming the odds, and giving the vote to the people.
“Our audience is gonna decide our champion on that night. It’s a really unique live event, I don’t even know if it’s gonna work. I’m still taking bold chances in the WWE space and I’m proud to be helping the John Cena Classic.”
John Cena Has “No Guilt Nor Shame” Over Friendship With Vince McMahon
In another recent interview, Cena addressed his relationship with Vince McMahon. In January 2024, McMahon resigned his positions in WWE and TKO following serious allegations levelled against him in a lawsuit filed by Janel Grant.
Despite the allegations, Cena has remained loyal to McMahon and reiterated that he believes it’s “OK to love somebody when they’re not perfect.”
